5 ways to look after your Spiritual Health

Updated: Oct 27, 2024

We look after our mental health and our physical health but what about our Spiritual Health?

When it comes to healthcare, there’s loads of support and focus on our mental health these days and for good reason!  It seems many of us in this fast-paced modern world are either anxious, stressed or depressed and a large number of us are on anti-depressants.  We also know the benefits of looking after our physical and emotional wellbeing.  But we aren’t just physical beings, we are eternal spiritual beings having a physical experience.  So how do we support and look after this often overlooked aspect of our being?

Over the years, I've faced my own challenges with mental health, and I wouldn't be who I am today without the support I received from friends, family, and counsellors. The loss of a boyfriend to suicide in the past has led me to believe that our current society tends to have a negative impact on our mental well-being rather than supporting it. This is evident in the adverse effects of social media and the rampant consumerism which makes many of us feel the need to have more and more "stuff" to feel enough. We find ourselves more detached from one another, from nature, and from our authentic selves than ever before. I know my mental health is not what it used to be, but that could be due to menopause!

I’m walking 60kms throughout Mental Health Month this October to raise funds to support Black Dog Institutes mental health research and services.  Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year, 9 people die by suicide each day in Australia, and 50% of people living with a mental illness will not seek professional help.  Disturbing facts right!

Remember back in the 80’s and Olivia Newton John’s video for her song ‘Physical’?  I had a similar leotard and head band and I loved going to the gym to parade around in the

aerobics class!  While I don’t wear a leotard anymore, I still love going to the gym, doing yoga, walking and keeping fit.  I feel so much better about myself both mentally and physically when I exercise, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, meditate and look after myself.  Chocolate helps too!

Which brings me to Spiritual Health. And what is it anyway?

Spiritual Health is about exploring our inner essence our life force energy, our connection with the universe, and a deeper meaning in life. It involves understanding ourselves as spiritual beings beyond our physical bodies, nurturing our souls, seeking connection with Infinite Source or God, and moving towards living our higher purpose.

Through practices such as meditation, mindfulness, prayer, and self-reflection, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace, harmony, and spiritual well-being. By tapping into our spiritual nature, we can gain clarity, wisdom, and resilience to navigate the ups and downs of life.

Here are 5 ways to support your Spiritual Health and Wellbeing:

  1. Meditation and Mindfulness

If there’s only one practice you could do each day which has the greatest benefit for your overall wellbeing its meditation!  Just 10-15 minutes each day is all you need to feel more calm, centred and connected with your true self.  It’s scientifically proven and has a long list of health benefits, here’s just a few: reduces stress, anxiety and depression, calms the mind, boosts your mood, enhances intuition, lowers blood pressure, and the list goes on.

The good news is you don't have to sit cross legged! Doing anything where you are in the present moment and mindful such as taking a walk or doing something creative is beneficial. Or try one of the many guided meditations on youtube or spotify.

  2. Forgive and Let Go

We are powerful creator beings but we often spend too much of our time and thoughts on things that we don't want rather than focusing on what it is that we do want. Our thoughts create things! It's the spiritual law of cause and effect. Have you noticed that if you are angry at someone then someone else is angry at you, or if you focus on lack then you get more lack? The best way to deal with it is to imagine the person or situation in front of you and say either out loud or in your mind "I forgive you, I send you blessings, there is only peace between us". Imagine the person or situation moving further and further away from you until it disappears. Do this a few times and you'll be amazed how it changes the energy.

  3. Gratitude

There is always so much to be grateful for including things such as warm sunshine, the air we breathe, our healthy body and food to eat. It's a great practice to have a journal beside your bed and each evening before going to sleep write all the things you're grateful for that day and things you did well. Also use your journal to write things you would like to manifest right down to the fine details.

Another great practice is to say I AM positive affirmations during the day. For example, when you first wake in the morning say I am happy, I am healthy, I am abundant.

  4. Explore your beliefs in a higher power

Spiritual health includes embracing your faith or beliefs and the deeper meaning in life.  It could be reconnecting with your religion, or exploring your beliefs in a higher power or god or universal source.  Praying and having a conversation with god is helpful, especially when you have challenges or difficulties in life.

Reading religious texts or spiritual books are wonderful ways to open up your perspective on god and the universe.

You could try handing over or surrendering your problems to god, your guides and angels and asking for their guidance, which can give you a sense of relief and inner knowing that you're not on your own.  You then need to trust that the answer or guidance will come to you in divine timing.

  5. Connect with your Spirit Team, Guides and the Angels

As a medium, I have a deep belief and knowing that our soul lives on in the spirit world after we depart this life. The spirit world is overlaid with our physical world, although it consists of a higher vibration or frequency, so that's why most of us can't see it with our physical eyes. I find great comfort in talking to my loved ones in spirit and I often get signs such as a song or a bird or feather which confirms they are with me. I encourage you to talk to your loved ones in spirit and if you feel the need for a deeper connection, consider booking a medium reading.

Each of us also have a Guardian Angel, and Spirit Guide/s as well as spirit helpers which could be one of your ancestors. They all love it when you ask for their guidance or thank them for being with you, even though you may not notice their presence. There are many angels and archangels who you can call on for assistance at any time. Archangel Michael is incredibly powerful and you can call on him to assist with protection or when you need strength. Lorna Byrne has some great information about angels check out https://lornabyrne.com

Ultimately, spiritual health contributes to your overall wellbeing and inner peace, helping you cope with the ups and downs of life and feel more fulfilled.  It’s an important part of your wellbeing alongside mental, physical and emotional health that can help you feel more connected and joy in life.  Bring it on!
